I was born in Michigan, USA, in 1990. I went to kindergarten in Tsukuba, Japan, then our family moved to Seoul, Korea where I grew up. When I was 15, my father got a sabbatical position in Columbia, so both my parents and I moved to the upstate New York where we lived for a year. I loved the classes in the American school so much, so when my parents had to go back to Korea for their work, I decided to stay by applying to a boarding school. I got into Blair Academy in New Jersey and had three wonderful years there. I got my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Stanford University in 2013. After graduating, I took two years working as a research assistant in the Shin Lab in South Korea to apply to medical schools in the US. Moving to Korea was an easier choice for me than to finance a house in California. In the Shin Lab, I was closely advised by Dr. Sehoon Keum and Dr. Hee-Sup Shin. I enjoyed working in the lab so much during this period, that I enrolled in a PhD program to continue working in neuroscience research. I graduated with a PhD degree in 2021 and moved to the Netherlands to join the Neuronal Networks of Memory Lab in the Radboud University & Donders Institute in Nijmegen.
Research
Social learning is when an animal learns to associate a place or situation with an emotion not by direct experience but by empathizing with somebody else's experience. Think of a time when you spent time in an airport for the first time and your parents were either stressed, or happy.
I am now studying the cortical network during social emotional learning.
During my PhD in Institute for Basic Science, South Korea, I studied the molecular cellular mechanism of observational fear in freely moving mice. I am familiar with mouse behavior and genetics, viral vector injection, optogenetics, in vivo electrophysiology, and two-photon calcium imaging.
Portfolio
An online portfolio of my drawings and paintings. You can also see some of my artworks on my instagram page.
Pottery
I started taking pottery classes on the winter of 2021 at the Radboud University. I’ve always been in love with admiring and buying ceramics, an affection inherited from my mother, and now I am learning to create my own! I give many of my work away to friends and family, but I will keep a visual record of my progress here. If you are interested in purchasing one, please send me an e-mail.
